Symbolic Dimensions of Mediated Activism

This working group strives to understand the discursive and symbolic connections and interactions of media activism in InterAsia and explores the empirical, theoretical, and methodological issues in the analysis of the production, circulation, and impact of icons and symbols of protest and opposition in InterAsia. For example, how are new political symbols created and disseminated? How are critical moments of great symbolic value preserved, passed down and absorbed into repertoires of contention? Under what circumstances to local and national symbols become trans-local and trans-national and how to global media spectacles impinge on regional and local mobilization?
